Now we turn to the smallest scale we know in a bubble chamber image, tracking the motion of sub-atomic particles. In the lower left is a crystal of uranium atoms, an image made with a STEM, a scanning tunneling electron microscope, which can magnify atoms 100 million times. Uranium is not intrinsically good or bad. We have used it for destructive purposes. This part of the prayer refers to God as “master of war,” perhaps a desperate hope that something is in control of the terrible forces we humans unleash upon each other.
